Hybrid Racer: Porsche 918 RSR

Posted by johnnyB 1

With CES, NAIAS, and a new year upon us, January is probably one of the best months ever. But what's better than January? January, where Porsche unveils their hybrid 918 RSR at NAIAS 2011.

Let me explain: the 918 RSR gets it's super-supplementary power from the brakes. Braking energy is transferred to a device called a "flywheel accumulator". This accumulator (seen below in place of the passenger seat) spins an internal flywheel that is then braked by electromagnetic force, essentially providing a boost to the front axles for about 8 seconds when fully charged.

All of that produces 767 hp. Yes, 7-6-7.

Kind of insane if you ask me. We'd like to tell you more about production...but there's been no word on it from Porsche AG thus far. Bummer. I wanted to preorder one.
